What is Trauma-informed Coaching?

Trauma-Informed Coaching is a specialized coaching approach grounded in the ICF definition of coaching and expanded through a neurobiologically informed understanding of trauma, safety, and human development. It integrates principles from trauma psychology, nervous system regulation, and relational neuroscience to create a safe, attuned, and empowering space for clients. Coaches are trained to recognize the signs and impact of trauma, including developmental and relational trauma, while supporting clients in a way that honors agency, pacing, and choice—without pathologizing or stepping into clinical roles.

This modality emphasizes presence, compassion, and co-regulation as foundational tools for healing and growth. Practitioners work within a high-integrity ethical framework, aligning with the ICF Code of Ethics and the British Psychological Society (BPS) Ethical Framework. By focusing on resilience, self-awareness, and embodied transformation, Trauma-Informed Coaching supports sustainable change while reducing the risk of re-traumatization. Coaches are trained to maintain non-clinical boundaries, refer appropriately, and navigate sensitive processes with care, clarity, and professionalism.
